TikTok has announced the closure of its ‘TikTok Lite’ rewards program in Europe following an investigation by the EU Commission.

The program, offering cash incentives for in-app activity, raised concerns about Digital Services Act (DSA) violations and its impact on younger users’ behaviour.

What is TikTok Lite?

TikTok had initially launched the TikTok Lite program in France and Spain on a limited basis.

The program allocated rewards points to users based on various actions within the app, such as discovering and liking videos.

EU Commission’s Concerns

The EU Commission’s primary concern was that the program could contribute to app addiction, particularly among younger users, by incentivising increased TikTok usage.

Under the DSA, any program that could potentially increase systemic risk must be submitted to EU officials for assessment before implementation.

TikTok’s Response

In response to the investigation, TikTok first suspended the program shortly after its launch.

Subsequently, the company has committed to permanently withdrawing the TikTok Lite Rewards program from the EU.

Implications of the TikTok Lite Ban Decision

For TikTok

The decision means that TikTok cannot operate any similar schemes without prior approval from the Commission.

This commitment is now legally binding, and any breach would amount to a violation of the DSA, potentially leading to significant fines.

For the EU Commission

This marks a significant win for the Commission in its efforts to police social media practices and ensure greater protections for EU users.

It sets a precedent for how the DSA process will operate in the future.

Broader Impact on Social Media Platforms

While the decision aims to protect EU users, it may also stifle innovation for social media platforms.

However, it is likely to promote greater accountability and transparency, potentially leading to better outcomes for users overall.

The closure of TikTok’s Lite program in Europe highlights growing scrutiny on social media’s impact on user behaviour and mental health.

With evolving regulations like the DSA, platforms must now evaluate new features’ potential implications before launching.
