TikTok Spark Ads: What They Are and How to Use Them

TikTok Spark Ads are one of the most powerful, and most misunderstood, ad formats available to brands working with a TikTok marketing agency or running their own paid activity.

Unlike standard TikTok ads, which are created specifically to run as paid content, Spark Ads let you boost existing organic TikTok videos as advertisements. That could be your own brand’s content, or content posted by creators who’ve given you permission to amplify it.

The result is an ad that doesn’t look like an ad. It appears in the For You Page exactly as it would organically – with the original account name, sounds, captions and engagement counts intact. For brands, that authenticity is the point.

In this guide we’ll cover exactly what Spark Ads are, how they differ from standard In-Feed Ads, when to use them, and how to set them up correctly.

What Are TikTok Spark Ads?

Spark Ads are a TikTok ad format that allows brands to promote existing TikTok posts, either their own organic content or creator content as paid advertisements. The ad shows up in users’ For You Pages just like any other TikTok, but with a ‘Sponsored’ label and a CTA button.

The key difference from standard ads is that Spark Ads are anchored to the original post. When someone likes, comments or follows from a Spark Ad, those interactions count on the original organic post. This means your engagement metrics compound: paid reach drives organic social proof.

Spark Ads use the original creator’s account handle and profile picture, making them feel native to the platform. A viewer has no way of knowing whether they’ve seen a boosted post or a purely organic one, until they look for the ‘Sponsored’ label.

Spark Ads vs Standard In-Feed Ads: What’s the Difference?

The easiest way to understand Spark Ads is to compare them directly with standard TikTok In-Feed Ads. We’ve written a full breakdown in our TikTok Spark Ads vs In-Feed Ads guide, but here’s the headline comparison:

When Should You Use Spark Ads?

1. When a piece of organic content is already performing well

If a post is generating strong organic engagement – good watch time, high comment volume, shares – it’s a signal that the content resonates. Amplifying it with Spark Ads multiplies reach while the algorithm data already shows the content works.

2. When you’re working with creators or influencers

Spark Ads are particularly powerful when paired with TikTok influencer campaigns. Instead of running dark ads (ads that only appear as paid content and never on the creator’s profile), you can boost the creator’s own post. This means their followers see it organically, and you reach a wider paid audience simultaneously. The creator’s credibility travels with the ad.

To run a Spark Ad using a creator’s content, they’ll need to generate an authorisation code in TikTok Creator Marketplace or through the TikTok app, which you then enter in TikTok Ads Manager.

3. When you want to build social proof quickly

Because Spark Ads direct engagement back to the original post, a strong campaign can dramatically increase the like, comment and share count on a piece of content. This social proof then persists after the campaign ends – unlike standard ad engagement, which disappears when you stop spending.

4. When your brand content already looks native

If your organic TikTok content is genuinely platform-native – shot in portrait, featuring real people, using trending sounds – Spark Ads will perform. This is one of the core principles behind how the team at Nonsensical approaches TikTok content creation: everything is built for TikTok first, not repurposed from elsewhere.

How to Set Up TikTok Spark Ads

  • Log into TikTok Ads Manager and create a new campaign. Choose your objective – Traffic, Conversions, Reach or Video Views all support Spark Ads.
  • At the ad group level, choose your targeting, budget and schedule as normal.
  • At the ad level, choose ‘Spark Ad’ as your ad format rather than creating a new creative.
  • Select the post you want to boost. If it’s your own post, link your TikTok account to Ads Manager and choose from your organic posts. If it’s a creator’s post, enter the authorisation code they’ve provided.
  • Add your CTA button and destination URL.
  • Submit for review and launch.

Important: the organic post must remain live for the Spark Ad to run. If the creator deletes their post, your campaign will stop. Always confirm with creators before running a campaign that the post won’t be removed.

TikTok Spark Ads: Best Practices

Choose content that’s already proven

Don’t boost content that hasn’t performed organically. If the algorithm hasn’t engaged with it yet, paid spend alone rarely fixes weak creative. Look for posts with above-average watch time, a high ratio of shares to views, or strong comment engagement.

Match your objective to the content format

Tutorial-style content works well for traffic and conversions. Entertainment or trend-led content works better for reach and brand awareness. Mismatching content type to campaign objective is one of the most common Spark Ads mistakes.

Test Spark Ads against standard In-Feed Ads

Run A/B tests where the same creative runs as both a Spark Ad and a standard In-Feed Ad. In most cases Spark Ads will show lower CPMs and higher engagement rates, but results vary by brand, category and audience.

Use Spark Ads to amplify creator content within 24-48 hours of posting

Creator content performs best early in its lifecycle. Amplifying within the first couple of days means you’re boosting content at the point of maximum organic momentum.

The Nonsensical View on Spark Ads

Spark Ads are one of the highest-performing formats available on TikTok right now, particularly when paired with a strong creator programme.

As a specialist TikTok agency, we consistently see Spark Ads outperform standard In-Feed Ads on CPM and engagement rate when the underlying content is strong.

The caveat is that Spark Ads only work when the underlying content is genuinely good. They amplify what’s already there – which means if you’re putting spend behind content that doesn’t resonate, you’re just paying to be ignored at scale.
